Summary

This week the movie I choose to watch is "The Terminal". I have already heard about this movie before and I have always wanted to see it. Many of my friends recommended me this movie and said that it is so great to see.

The movie is about a man without country. In the beginning of the movie, the main character Navorski arrived at the airport in the United States of America. However, when he was trying to exit the airport, there was something happened. He was rejected to exit the airport and then was taken to an office. Dixon, the manager of the airport, tried to explain to Navorski about what happened to his country.

That is, when Navorski was in the flight, his own country, Krakozhia, was in a war. His country's government had a revolution. The original government to which Navorski belonged no longer existed. His own country no longer existed, so he became a person without nationality. And the airport couldn't let a person without country enter into America. Navorski should wait. He should wait for the new identification and some papers, and those were going to take at least six months. At first, Navorski didn't understand what Dixon was saying because he couldn't understand English. But when he saw TV news he finally realized his country were in war. And gradually he realized that he was a "unacceptable" person who couldn't go anywhere but could only stay in the airport.

Navorski started his life in airport. He lived in Gate 67 which was still under construction. Day after day, he found a part-time job in airport so as to survive. Some of the workers in the airport became Navorski's friends - the cleaner, a worker in food department, the security guard and also the ground staff. But the manager of the airport Dixson always wanted to pick on Navorski.

One day there was a person who wanted to bring some bottles of pills into America. However, if the pills were for his father, he would need to fill out some special form or he couldn't bring the pills with him. He spoke Bulgarian, same as Navorski, and he didn't understand why he couldn't bring his pills. He was very irritated about that he couldn't bring the pills out. Because of the difference of the language, they couldn't communicate. Even with unwillingness, Dixson asked Navorski for help. Although Navorski could only speak a little English, he still tried to be the translator between the man and the staff of the airport. Navorski told the man that if the pills were for his father, he should have some special forms from the hospital. However, Dixson just wanted to let the crazy man go, so he commanded that, "The man go, but the pills stay." The man got crazier, bursted into tears, and yell out that he really didn't know. Navorski ended up saying that the pills were for goats in order to save the man, because if the medicine is for animal, then there is no need to fill out the forms. The man thanked Navorski with tears. Dixson had no choice but to let the man go with his pills. After this event, Navorski became a "hero" in the airport for saving the poor man.

One night Amelia came to find Navorski and told him that she had broken up with the man. Navorski told Amelia about himself, about why he stayed in the airport, and why he had to go to New York. The reason is for his father. His father likes a Jazz band which were 57 members. His father waited for all of their signs for forty years. But there was still one his father hadn't yet received because he died. Navorski made a promise to his father that he would go to New York, find the last member of the band, make him sign his name, and put the paper into a small can for his father. That's why Navorski had to wait to go to New York.

Another day, Navorski had already lived in the airport for almost nine months. The war in his country was over. Navorski could leave the airport when he got new identification, visa, and passport. Amelia brought all the papers Navorski needed to him so as to help him leave the airport, but told him a heartbroken news. It was Amelia's "boyfriend" help her prepare all these papers so they were together again. Amelia had to go. It is destiny. They couldn't be together. She couldn't go with Navorski.

Quote& Good Saying

(Dixon is convincing Navorski to say he is afraid of his country in order to cast him out of the airport.)

Dixon: You are afraid of Krakozhia.

Navorski: Krakozhia? No, I am not afraid from Krakozhia.

Dixon: Please don’t be afraid to tell me you’re afraid of Krakozhia.

Navorski: Is home. I am not afraid from my home.

.............................................................................................................................................

 Amelia: Ok what?

Navorski: Ok. Lunch……with you.

Amelia: You will have lunch with me?

Navorski: Yes.

Amelia: You are not running for a flight or……?

Navorski: I wait.

(Pager beeps)

Amelia: I have to go.

Navorski: I have to stay.

Amelia: That's the story of my life.

Navorski: Me, too.

...............................................................................................

Navorski: My father waited for 40 years. And they all signed names, one by one, and sent to my father. All but not one. Benny Golson. My father died before Benny Golson writes his name and sends to my father. So I made him promise. I keep promise. I promise I will go to New York, find Benny Golson, have him write name to put in can.

Amelia: And you're living here all this time so you could do this for your father?

Navorski: Maybe I think he do it for me. You say you are waiting for something. And I say to you, "Yes, we are all waiting."

Amilia: What are you waiting for?

Navorski: You. I wait for you.

Reflection

Many of my friends have recommended this movie to me, but I just don't have the chance to see it. That's one of the reason why I chose this movie for this week. Now I am going to share some of my thoughts about this movie.

First, I want to talk about the relationship in the story. I think the friendliness in the movie is so touching. Navorski lives the life in the airport. Day after day, he gets along with the staff there everyday. He made a lot of ture friends there even he couldn't speak well English. Navorski is a kind person. He tried to help everyone in need in the airport. He even helped his friend chase after his wife. He also helped the poor man with the pills. Gradually almost all the workers in the airport started to like Navorski. When Navorski wanted to enter into America in the last part of the movie, almost all the people in the airport came to help him and watch him leave.

Second, I think the love between Navorski and Amelia is so romantic. They met in the airport again and again, about five times, even with a very short time for each time but every meeting they have draws them closer and closer. Although they couldn't be together in the end, they had a beautiful love. Furthermore, I think the main theme of this movie is "wait". Both of them are waiting, waiting for someone in their life. The conversation they had in the Gate 67 really impresses me. Navorski said what he was waiting for in his life was Amelia. It is the most romantic saying I have ever heard.

Third, what makes me really impressive is that Navorski originally couldn't speak English. You might find that there are some grammatical mistakes in some quotations. That is because Navorski couldn't speak English actually. In this movie we can see how he learns and improves his English. Although his grammar is poor, he still can communicate with people. He just said, "Dinner.......with you. Ok." and he successfully dated with Amelia. I think it helps me a lot in learning English speaking. Although I couldn't react so quickly and speak in the right grammar rules, as long as I dare talk it is enough. Like the main character, my English could improve once I try to use it.
